Central Croatia

Central Croatia makes up the continental part of Croatia bordered by three rivers — Sava, Mura and Drava which represents the basis of Croatian prosperity. Its landscape is remarkable due to the interlacing of the hills and valleys. Central Croatia is divided into four parts — Zagreb and countryside, Međimurje, Hrvatsko zagorje and Podravina.

Central Croatia

Throughout the past, Central Croatia was subjected to different reigns which made it impossible for it to develop on a proper level. But today, some of the cities situated in Central Croatia are considered the most populated ones, such as the capital Zagreb, Varaždin, Sisak, and Karlovac.

Hunting tourism, business tourism, historical remains, castles and much more represent the advantages of Central Croatia. Medieval castles and the remains of the Neanderthal prehistoric man in Krapina are the definite baits not only for the foreigners but for the local people. Besides, the mysterious notabilities, old churches, fortresses and other monuments reveal the true spirit of this medieval region. Nearby Krapina, there is the proverbial castle TrakoÅ¡ćan which gives a full insight to a medieval aristocratic life.

Since this region is situated inland, deep blue seas are replaced with rivers and spas. Spas seem to be more popular due to their special tourist offers. Some of the most famous ones are Krapinske toplice, Varaždinske toplice, Tuheljske toplice and Stubičke toplice. Religious tourism seems to be popular due to mass pilgrimage to the famous Croatian shrine Marija Bistrica.

Regardless of what city you wind up in, you can explore it for days. Karlovac is famous for being located on four rivers, Zagreb for being the capital city with lots of parks, museums, exhibitions, monuments and other attractions. Varaždin is known for numerous castles which make the city itself a huge tourist destination. Varaždin is also called a baroque city. If you are more nature oriented, you can take a hike, try rafting or simply sit on the grass and admire the nature.
