Slavonia

Situated in eastern Croatia, covered in valleys and plains, Slavonia is totally different from Dalmatia. Slavonia's meadows, valleys, plains, low mountains and Dalmatia's limestone area make Croatia as varied as it is. Two different regions with different geographic characteristics, different temper, different climates with only one mutual characteristic — being situated in Croatia, which tells a lot about Croatia's beauty.

Slavonia

Slavonia is a remarkable agricultural center due to its position between the Sava and Drava rivers. Slavonia’s biggest city is Osijek, a historical and cultural spot with approximately 120,000 inhabitants. Some of the other cities in that area are Đakovo, Slavonski Brod, Vinkovci, Virovitica, Županja, Slatina, NaÅ¡ice... Do not let it confuse you. Passing through Slavonia you can expect hills as well, not just the plains and other green surfaces. Some of the hills located in that lowland area are Papuk, Psunj, Krndija, Dilj, PožeÅ¡ka Gora...

Situated inland, Slavonia has a continental climate. Summers are hot but bearable and winters tend to get way too snowy.

Throughout the past, Slavonia had a huge role and always seemed to keep close to Croatia. As we know, Croatia we know today was fragmented in the past and Croatia dated from those days was only a little part of today’s Croatia and Slavonia was another one, along with other parts. All the parts seemed to be under the rule of powerful countries. It was not unusual that Slavonia had been under the rule of one country, Croatia under the rule of another country and, for instance, Dubrovnik made a Republic for itself.

Slavonians cultivate different plants such as wheat, maize, barley, oats, rice, and millet. Slavonia has its own traditional cuisine mostly consisting of meat — the most famous dishes are kulen, kobasica, smoked ham... Slavonians also seem to enjoy a variety of wines and some homemade spirit products such as different types of rakija. Slavonians are friendly and gregarious people known for their hospitality. You always feel welcome when around them.

Even though it is situated inland, far away from the sea, Slavonia is a peaceful region and has pure nature. During the hot days, people chill out by the rivers and the most famous river beach in Osijek called Copacabana.

If you want to truly feel the nature, peace and the beauty of inland life... Slavonia gives it all.
