Varaždin

Varaždin is a city in Central Croatia situated nearby the Drava River. It is frequently referred to as a baroque city due to its baroque style, monuments and spirit. Varaždin has a very interesting history and if it could speak it would probably point out that it was the capital of Croatia in 1756. It also represented a huge administrative and cultural center, just like it does these days. Surely, historical documents reveal other important information stating that the fire in 1776 destroyed most of the city compelling the authority to move the administration back to Zagreb.

Varaždin

The industrial zone of Varaždin was not destroyed during the Croatian war of Independence. Textile company Varteks and the food company Vindija present two of the most well-known companies not just in Varaždin but in Croatia as well. A big part in the creation of a well-developed city was its financing sector.

Varaždin is a popular excursion destination and seems to be lively throughout the whole year. The Old City (Stari Grad) is a site of a number of buildings dating from the medieval times, which you shouldn't miss out on seeing when you come to Varaždin. Bell towers are a must-see in this city sometimes called the city of bell towers. Palaces and old buildings dating from the 16th century show the beauty of baroque, rococo and classicism. The Croatian National Theater is an everlasting reminder of Croatian culture just like the Varaždin Folklore ensemble established to preserve national songs, dancing, and rituals.

No, Varaždin is not all about the buildings — parks and promenades decorate and complete its beauty. Advantages of the Drava River are fully used — angling, recreation, sports. Varaždin has one thing in common with Split — they both have statues of Grgur Ninski.

Since 1971, every year at the beginning of autumn, a baroque music festival has been held. Streets and squares seem to come back to life during September, when the street festival — Špancir fest — occurs.
